The recent passing of Nigerian artist Mohbad has prompted revelations and accusations about unethical practices in the country’s entertainment business.

Singer Cynthia Morgan took aim at her former label boss Jude Okoye, claiming the way she was treated “made me give up on humanity.” Morgan previously alleged financial and contract improprieties by Okoye’s Northside Entertainment.

Producer Samklef also spoke out in Mohbad’s aftermath, claiming he was purposefully sidelined for years by Banky W, despite helping him launch careers of WizKid and others.

Samklef alleged Wizkid also had to “fight” for fair treatment and exit from Banky’s Empire Mates Entertainment. Neither Banky W nor EME have addressed these claims yet.

While these called-out music executives have not responded, the accusations further reveal dark clouds over the industry following Mohbad’s decline and demise.

Despite bringing stars to light, some labels apparently leverage their power against talent. But artists are now increasingly speaking out against alleged exploitation.
