The Nigerian music world could be in for a hot end to the year after what transpired between rappers, Erigga and Chinko Ekun, at this year’s edition of the Merrybet Celebrity Fans Challenge.
On a night when the biggest names in the Nigerian music industry thrilled thousands of their fans who came out to have fun with them, one of the highlights was the rap/diss battle that saw Chinko Ekun flaw the Warri-based Erigga.
As was the setting at the event, which is Nigeria’s biggest celebrity football party, the two rappers were pitched against each other to contest for a trophy.
One of the tasks given to them by the host, Kiibati Bankole, and her assistant, Broda Shaggi, was for them to ‘diss’ each other in pidgin in sixty seconds each.
Erigga went first and decided to play safe with his lines, throwing weak jibes at Chinko Ekun who stood and watched from close proximity.
Hoping his ‘rap-mate’ would be nice enough to recognize it was just a game and not banter, Erigga passed the mic to Ekun so he could spit his bars.
“Me I get bad mouth oo” those were the first words of the former YBNL artist, as he asked the crowd if they wanted him to go hard on Paperboy. Of course, the already hyped up crowd gave him their blessings.
With the backing of the crowd, the tiger went loose. Line after vicious line, he dragged his opponent’s personality, intelligence and music career.
“You only popular for Warri,” the Lagos-based act told Erigga what many on the streets already thought about him, before stating that even though he sang motivation, he was not motivated.
As if that wasn’t enough, he brought in his Headies awards win over Erigga into the bants, reminding him of how he flawed him to win a category they were both nominated for.
After receiving the heavy punches, Erigga made to save face by requesting for another round but the organisers, who were clear on the rules from scratch, wouldn’t allow it.
He was, however, handed the mic to say some things after Chinko Ekun was pronounced winner of the contest. It was at that moment that he promised to do a reply and post it on the music streaming platform, iTunes.
Again, not holding back, Chinko Ekun picked up the mic and swore to respond to him if he made any such moves. That again sent the crowd into wild jubilation.
